A sindoor daani cut as a leaf, with a single deep well inside and a plain feather pin to go with it. Both German Silver, both boxed in red velvet.

This is the quiet one. No red stones, no gold-tone settings, no beading — just chased metal and one plain pale stone at the tip of the lid. If our other daani looks like a wedding gift, this one looks like the thing you actually keep on the dressing table and open every morning.

One well, and it is deep

The inside is a single round well, turned smooth and left unengraved, sunk deep into the body. One colour, plenty of it, and it empties clean because powder has nothing to catch on.

The lid lifts off completely — there is no hinge. That means both hands free when you are filling it, and nothing to work loose after a few years of daily opening. It also means the lid is a separate thing you can put down and mislay, which the hinged kind is not; worth knowing before you choose between them.

The pin

Five inches, cut as an open feather with the barbs pierced right through, a small bead where the vane meets the shaft, and a rounded tip. No stones on this one either — it is a tool, and it is shaped like one.

It draws a clean line in the parting, which a fingertip does not, and it keeps the sindoor in the box rather than under a fingernail.

Which of our three daanis is this?

We now sell three, and they are genuinely different — worth thirty seconds before you choose:

  • This one — leaf shape, 3 x 2.5 inch, one deep well, plain finish. The everyday one.
  • The two-compartment daani — larger at 5 inch, paan-leaf shape, divided inside for sindoor and kumkum, with red stones and gold polish. The bridal one.
  • The three-piece set — a 3-inch daani with a red stone, plus a pooja bell and a feather pin. The one-gift-covers-everything one.

Size

  • Daani — 3 inch long, 2.5 inch across
  • Pin — 5 inch
  • Two pieces, plus the lid.

Material and care

German Silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. There is no silver in it — the name describes the colour, not the content. There is no gold polish anywhere on this set, and the single stone on the lid is a plain set stone, not a pearl and not a moonstone.

  • Empty it before you clean it. Wet sindoor stains, and stained sindoor sets hard in the bottom of a well this deep.
  • Do not submerge it. Water sits behind the set stone and in the chasing. Damp cloth outside, dry at once.
  • Wipe the raised chasing with a dry cotton cloth and leave the recesses dark — that shadow is what makes the leaf pattern read. No metal polish.
  • It will darken over a few months. That is tarnish, not damage — the care guide has the method.

In the box

  • One leaf sindoor daani with its lift-off lid, 3 x 2.5 inch
  • One feather pin, 5 inch
  • Red velvet gift box with a brass clasp

What exactly is German Silver?

An alloy of copper, nickel and zinc — no silver in it at all. It holds a bright, warm shine, resists tarnish far better than sterling, and costs a fraction as much. Indian households have used it for generations for exactly this reason.

How do I clean and care for it?

Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth — then dry it straight away. No steel wool, no scouring powder. Wipe off ghee, oil and kumkum the same day. It will darken slowly over months; that is tarnish, not damage, and a dry cloth brings it back.

When will it reach me?

Dispatched within 48 hours with a tracking link by SMS and email. 3–4 working days to metros, 4–6 elsewhere. Prepaid only — we do not offer cash on delivery.

Can I return it?

Yes — within 7 days of delivery, unused and in its original box, for a full refund. We arrange the pickup. Engraved pieces are the only exception.

Hand-finished German Silver pieces arranged on plinths — an engraved thali, jali water bottle and tumblers, lotus aarti diya and a gold-lined bowl in a velvet box

Why German Silver

Made to be used, not stored away

Every piece is spun on a hand lathe rather than pressed out of a die, chased with a chisel, and checked by a person before it is seated in its velvet case.

  • An alloy the whole way through — there is no plating to wear off
  • Resists tarnish far better than sterling — a dry cloth, not a polish kit
  • Food-safe and non-reactive — serve prasad, kheer and dry fruit from it
