A sindoor daani shaped as a paan leaf, with two wells inside instead of one, and a feather pin to apply with. Both in German Silver, both finished by hand, boxed together in red velvet.

Two compartments, which is the whole point

Almost every sindoor daani sold is a single well. This one is divided down the middle: sindoor on one side, kumkum or akshat on the other. One box on the dressing table instead of two, and the two colours never meet — which anyone who has scraped orange out of a red box will understand immediately.

The inside is left plain and matt. Powder does not cling to a smooth well the way it settles into engraving, so it empties clean.

The feather pin

Five inches, drawn as a peacock feather — the vane cut into separate barbs, a stone set at the eye, and a tapering shaft that ends in a rounded point rather than a sharp one.

It is for drawing the line in the parting properly. A fingertip gives you a smudge roughly where you wanted it; a pin gives you an edge. It also means the sindoor stays in the box instead of under a fingernail.

What the metal and the stones actually are

German Silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. There is no silver in it — the name describes the colour, not the content.

The gold-coloured bands and settings are gold polish. Not gold, not gold-plated, not vermeil. A gold-tone finish over the same base metal, and we will never describe it as anything else.

The red and clear stones are set stones. They are not rubies and they are not diamonds, and we are not going to call them that. They are set in bezels and prongs, not glued into a recess.

Size

  • Daani — 5 inch long, 2.5 inch wide, lid closed
  • Pin — 5 inch
  • Two pieces. The lid opens to the two wells underneath.

When people give it

This is a bridal and suhaag gift before it is anything else — karva chauth, teej, a new bride, muh dikhai, wedding shagun. It also travels well as a griha pravesh or Diwali gift for a couple setting up a home, because it is personal without being presumptuous, and it costs less than it looks like it does.

Care, and this one matters

  • Do not wash it with powder still inside. Wet sindoor stains, and stained sindoor sets hard in a corner. Tip it out, wipe the wells dry, then clean.
  • Do not submerge it. Water gets behind set stones and stays there. A damp cloth on the outside, then dry immediately.
  • Go easy on the gold polish. Scrubbing wears a gold-tone finish off faster than anything else. Dry cloth, light hand, no metal polish on it.
  • The German Silver will darken over a few months. That is tarnish, not damage — the care guide has the full method.

In the box

What exactly is German Silver?

An alloy of copper, nickel and zinc — no silver in it at all. It holds a bright, warm shine, resists tarnish far better than sterling, and costs a fraction as much. Indian households have used it for generations for exactly this reason.

How do I clean and care for it?

Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth — then dry it straight away. No steel wool, no scouring powder. Wipe off ghee, oil and kumkum the same day. It will darken slowly over months; that is tarnish, not damage, and a dry cloth brings it back.

When will it reach me?

Dispatched within 48 hours with a tracking link by SMS and email. 3–4 working days to metros, 4–6 elsewhere. Prepaid only — we do not offer cash on delivery.

Can I return it?

Yes — within 7 days of delivery, unused and in its original box, for a full refund. We arrange the pickup. Engraved pieces are the only exception.

Hand-finished German Silver pieces arranged on plinths — an engraved thali, jali water bottle and tumblers, lotus aarti diya and a gold-lined bowl in a velvet box

Why German Silver

Made to be used, not stored away

Every piece is spun on a hand lathe rather than pressed out of a die, chased with a chisel, and checked by a person before it is seated in its velvet case.

  • An alloy the whole way through — there is no plating to wear off
  • Resists tarnish far better than sterling — a dry cloth, not a polish kit
  • Food-safe and non-reactive — serve prasad, kheer and dry fruit from it
