A complete aarti thali in German Silver — the plate, the two bowls that sit on it, the lamp, and the pin. Five pieces, chased by hand, seated in a navy velvet box.

What the five pieces are

  • The thali — 7.5 inches across. Chased edge to edge: a four-armed floral pinwheel turning out of a central rosette, then a raised rim carrying its own narrow border of leaf and flower. The well is deep enough that a rolling batti stays on the plate.
  • Two bowls — 3 inches across, a matched pair. Chased on the outside, left plain and polished inside so haldi, kumkum, akshat or panchamrit lift out clean. One for each, or one for kumkum and one for rice, however you set your thali.
  • The footed diya — 2.5 inches across. A chased lamp bowl lifted on a chased flared foot, with a turned pin standing in the centre — that pin is what holds a cotton batti upright instead of letting it slide into the ghee.
  • The feather pin — 5 x 2 inches. An open feather with the barbs pierced right through, a bead where the vane meets the shaft, a rounded tip. It draws a clean line in a parting, which a fingertip does not.

Why the foot on the diya matters

A flat diya sitting directly on a chased thali gets hot underneath and leaves a ring. This one stands on its own foot, so the heat and the ghee stay off the plate, and you can lift the lamp by the stem while it is lit without reaching over the flame.

It also means the light sits higher than the bowls. Small thing, but it is the difference between a thali that reads as arranged and one that reads as a pile.

Read the sizes before you buy

7.5 inches is a puja thali, not a serving thali. It is sized for the mandir shelf and for carrying in one hand during aarti — it will not hold a meal, and it is not a dinner plate. The bowls at 3 inches are katoris for powders and offerings, not for dal.

If you want something you can actually serve dry fruits or mithai in, the dry fruit set with its 11-inch tray is the one to look at instead.

Using it

  • Set the two bowls on the plate, the lamp between them, the pin along the edge. That is the whole arrangement — nothing to assemble.
  • Ghee or oil in the diya, cotton batti over the pin. Let the lamp cool before you wipe it; warm metal and a cloth pick up smears.
  • Wipe wet offerings off the same day. Kumkum and haldi stain if they sit, and panchamrit will mark the plain interiors. This is the single thing that decides how this set looks in three years.
  • Between festivals it lives on a mandir shelf as a set, which is most of what it does.

Material and care

German Silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. There is no silver in it — the name describes the colour, not the content. There is no gold polish anywhere on this set.

  • Wipe the raised chasing with a dry cotton cloth and leave the recesses dark. That shadow is what makes the flower work on the thali read at all — polish it flat and the pattern disappears.
  • No metal polish, no scouring powder, above all on the feather pin, which is pierced and thin.
  • Do not soak the thali. Water sits in the chasing and in the rim border and dries as spotting.
  • It will darken over a few months. That is tarnish, not damage — the care guide has the method.

Why people give it

An aarti thali is the first thing a new house needs and the one thing most people do not think to buy for themselves — which makes it a straightforward griha pravesh and housewarming gift. It also covers Diwali, Navratri, Karwa Chauth, a wedding, and setting up a mandir for the first time. The navy box opens well enough to hand over as it is.

In the box

  • One chased thali, 7.5 inch
  • Two chased bowls, 3 inch
  • One footed diya with wick pin, 2.5 inch
  • One feather pin, 5 x 2 inch
  • Navy velvet gift box with a brass clasp and cream satin lining

The flowers, the lit brass diya and the gift box in the photographs are styling, not part of the order.

What exactly is German Silver?

An alloy of copper, nickel and zinc — no silver in it at all. It holds a bright, warm shine, resists tarnish far better than sterling, and costs a fraction as much. Indian households have used it for generations for exactly this reason.

How do I clean and care for it?

Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth — then dry it straight away. No steel wool, no scouring powder. Wipe off ghee, oil and kumkum the same day. It will darken slowly over months; that is tarnish, not damage, and a dry cloth brings it back.

When will it reach me?

Dispatched within 48 hours with a tracking link by SMS and email. 3–4 working days to metros, 4–6 elsewhere. Prepaid only — we do not offer cash on delivery.

Can I return it?

Yes — within 7 days of delivery, unused and in its original box, for a full refund. We arrange the pickup. Engraved pieces are the only exception.

Hand-finished German Silver pieces arranged on plinths — an engraved thali, jali water bottle and tumblers, lotus aarti diya and a gold-lined bowl in a velvet box

Why German Silver

Made to be used, not stored away

Every piece is spun on a hand lathe rather than pressed out of a die, chased with a chisel, and checked by a person before it is seated in its velvet case.

  • An alloy the whole way through — there is no plating to wear off
  • Resists tarnish far better than sterling — a dry cloth, not a polish kit
  • Food-safe and non-reactive — serve prasad, kheer and dry fruit from it
