The short version: wipe it dry and it will outlast you. The longer version is below.
Everyday cleaning
- Wash in warm water with a mild dish soap. A soft sponge is plenty.
- Dry immediately with a soft cotton cloth. Water left to sit is the only thing that dulls the finish.
- Do not use steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive powders. They will scratch the polish.
After pooja
Oil, ghee, kumkum and camphor residue should be wiped off the same day. Warm water and a drop of soap removes all of them. Kumkum can stain if left for weeks — if it does, a paste of baking soda and water lifted with a soft cloth will take it off.
If the shine dulls
German Silver does not tarnish the way sterling does, but a piece stored in a damp cupboard for a year may lose some brightness. Any standard metal polish restores it in a few minutes. Rinse and dry fully afterwards.
Storage
- Store dry, ideally wrapped in the cotton pouch your order arrived in.
- Avoid sealed plastic bags — trapped moisture is the enemy.
- Stack katoris and thalis with a cloth layer between them to avoid scratching.
Is it food safe?
Yes. Our pieces are food safe and non-reactive for serving. For long-term storage of highly acidic foods (lemon, tamarind, curd left overnight), use a glass or steel container instead.
