Three deep bowls, three spoons and a tray they all sit on — seven pieces of German Silver, chased by hand and boxed in red velvet. It is the set that comes out for dry fruits at Diwali, mukhwas after dinner, and supari and elaichi when someone drops in.

The tray is sized for the bowls

This sounds obvious and usually is not. The three bowls sit on the 11-inch tray in a row with the spoons beside them, which means the whole thing travels from kitchen to table in one hand and comes back the same way. A bowl set without a tray is three trips and three rings on the table.

The tray has a beaded rim standing proud of the surface, so it holds things on rather than letting them slide, and the floor is etched edge to edge — it is worth looking at empty.

The chasing

Every bowl is worked over its entire outside and inside with a field of flower medallions inside a scalloped rim, and the same hand runs down the spoon handles. Hold two bowls side by side and the pattern lands slightly differently on each. That is a chisel, not a press.

The bowls of the spoons are left plain and polished — a chased spoon bowl looks better in a photograph and is worse to eat from.

Size

  • Bowls — 3.5 inch across, three of them
  • Spoons — 4.5 inch long, three of them
  • Tray — 11 inch by 5 inch
  • Seven pieces in total.

The bowls are a serving size, not a katori for a full portion — right for almonds, pista, kishmish, mukhwas, chocolates, or a spoonful of halwa alongside a meal.

Serving from it

German Silver is non-reactive and food safe, and this is a set we would use ourselves. Two honest limits:

  • Serve from it, do not store in it. Lemon, tamarind, curd and anything sharp should not sit in metal overnight. Put leftovers in glass or steel.
  • It is not for the oven, the microwave or the fridge. Room temperature and warm food only.

Material and care

German Silver is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. There is no silver in it — the name describes the colour, not the content, which is why a seven-piece set with this much hand-work on it costs what it costs. There is no gold polish anywhere here; it is the bare alloy throughout.

  • Hand wash only — warm water, mild soap, soft sponge. A dishwasher will dull the finish and pit the chasing.
  • Dry immediately, inside and out. Water left standing is the one thing that reliably marks it.
  • No steel wool, no scouring powder, no metal polish on the pattern. The chasing is fine and shallow and polish flattens it.
  • It will darken over a few months, first inside the cuts — which is what makes the flower work read. That is tarnish, not damage. The care guide has the full method.

Who it is for

This is the safest gift in our range, in the good sense: everybody serves something to guests, nobody already owns three of these, and it needs no shelf, no nail and no explanation. It suits Diwali and Dhanteras, griha pravesh, wedding and anniversary gifting, and corporate gifting where one box has to work across a list of people you do not know.

In the box

  • Three chased bowls, 3.5 inch
  • Three spoons, 4.5 inch
  • One tray, 11 x 5 inch
  • Red velvet gift box with a brass clasp

The dry fruits, flowers and lamps in the photographs are styling, not part of the order.

What exactly is German Silver?

An alloy of copper, nickel and zinc — no silver in it at all. It holds a bright, warm shine, resists tarnish far better than sterling, and costs a fraction as much. Indian households have used it for generations for exactly this reason.

How do I clean and care for it?

Warm water, mild soap, soft cloth — then dry it straight away. No steel wool, no scouring powder. Wipe off ghee, oil and kumkum the same day. It will darken slowly over months; that is tarnish, not damage, and a dry cloth brings it back.

When will it reach me?

Dispatched within 48 hours with a tracking link by SMS and email. 3–4 working days to metros, 4–6 elsewhere. Prepaid only — we do not offer cash on delivery.

Can I return it?

Yes — within 7 days of delivery, unused and in its original box, for a full refund. We arrange the pickup. Engraved pieces are the only exception.

Why German Silver

Made to be used, not stored away

Every piece is spun on a hand lathe rather than pressed out of a die, chased with a chisel, and checked by a person before it is seated in its velvet case.

  • An alloy the whole way through — there is no plating to wear off
  • Resists tarnish far better than sterling — a dry cloth, not a polish kit
  • Food-safe and non-reactive — serve prasad, kheer and dry fruit from it
